Rare Crimson Electrical Discharge Captured in Skies

Three image specialists based in the island nation have successfully captured images of “red sprites”, one of the rarest celestial events on Earth, during which bright red bursts manifest in the sky.

A Memorable Night of Discovery

The imaging specialists initially planned to photograph the night sky over the unique geological structures in the South Island of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon.

Assuming they would be lucky to get clear skies that after-dark period, but their night became “a truly memorable experience,” one photographer stated.

While reviewing his images for a Milky Way panorama and found he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the individual noted. “The discovery was astounding – we experienced joyful noises and numerous expressions in the darkness.”

Defining Red Sprites

These crimson flashes are atmospheric energy releases in the upper atmosphere, generated by thunderstorms. Differing from lightning that shoots towards the earth, the phenomena ascend towards the upper atmosphere, producing appearances that look like columns, carrots or even bell-shaped organisms. The earliest recorded picture of a this phenomenon was taken – by chance – in 1989, by a research unit at the University of Minnesota.

Brief and Ethereal Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are infrequently observed to the human sight, but a team member was fortunate. “I was coincidentally viewing right at an occurrence when it took place – just a perfect coincidence observing the appropriate section of the heavens and I observed a momentary scarlet burst,” he explained.

Seeing the occurrences was a goal for the photographer, an award-winning night scape photographer. “It seems that you are observing something that is not real, it feels otherworldly … there is an intense scarlet hue that is visible for an instant, so it is captivating to see.”

Technical and Creative Mastery

Photographing a this phenomenon demands a proficiency with advanced imaging techniques, as well as an familiarity with scientific principles and creative flare, the individual said. “It is a deeply engaging type of photography that’s very rewarding as well.”

A different team member said it was among the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his life. “I witnessed the galactic band illuminating above the horizon while these enormous red tendrils of illumination danced above a electrical event far on the horizon,” he described.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

To his knowledge, there are no additional photographs depicting red sprites and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.

“This was a singular occasion when you understand you are observing something that may not recur in your lifetime.”
