{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences close call with F1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel crossed the track directly in front of him
The concerning event occurred on the third circuit when safety workers were spotted on the circuit as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his broken nose section
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson spoke to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"
"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two dudes running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Obviously there's been a miscommunication somehow but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a live track marshals can be permitted to just run across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some sort of explanation, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Formal Inquiry in Progress
F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is actively examining the circumstances
"Following a turn one incident, race control was notified that wreckage remained on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the regulatory authority
"During the third lap, track officials were notified and made ready to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were canceled and a caution signal was shown in that zone"
"We are still investigating what happened subsequent to that time"
